Allergy-Friendly Halloween Treats Every Trick-or-Treater Can Eat

Halloween should be about the costumes, the sugar rush and the neighbour who goes way too hard on the decorations. Not about a kid standing on the doorstep watching everyone else get a treat they can't have.

If you've got a child with a food allergy, you know the drill. The bucket comes home, you tip it out on the kitchen table, and half of it goes straight into the "no" pile. Milk chocolate. Nutty bars. "May contain" on almost everything else. The fun bit becomes a sorting job, and someone small ends up feeling left out on the one night that's meant to be all about them.

So here's our pitch for a D*mn Good Halloween: hand out something that everyone on the doorstep can actually eat.

D*mn Good Ginger, Choc & Orange cookies in an individually sealed 38g bag

Why Halloween is tricky for allergy families

Most classic trick-or-treat sweets are a gamble. Fun-size chocolate usually contains milk, and often soya. A lot of it is made in factories that also handle nuts, so it carries a "may contain" warning even when nuts aren't in the recipe. Unwrapped sweets from a big communal bowl lose their labels entirely, so parents have no way of checking.

None of that is anyone's fault. It just means allergy parents spend Halloween doing detective work, and allergy kids spend it hearing "not that one, sweetheart".

Our pick for the treat bowl

We'll admit we're biased, but D*mn Good cookies tick every box for a stress-free doorstep:

  • Free from the 14 major allergens, so no milk, egg, nuts, peanuts, soya, sesame or gluten-containing cereals, plus the other seven on the UK list.
  • No "may contain" warning. They're baked on a site that doesn't handle nuts.
  • Vegan and gluten-free, so plant-based and coeliac trick-or-treaters are covered too.
  • Individually sealed 38g bags, with the full ingredients printed on every one. Parents can check the label, kids can stash them in the bucket, nobody has to guess.
  • They actually taste like a treat. Six to eight mini cookies per bag, with the crunch-and-melt thing going on that got two of our flavours a Great Taste award.

For spooky season we'd go for Honeycomb & Choc, our bestseller and a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, and Ginger, Choc & Orange, which is basically autumn in a bag. Warm ginger, a hit of orange, very bonfire-night-adjacent.

Five ways to make your doorstep allergy-friendly

1. Keep treats in their wrappers. A bowl of loose sweets looks generous, but without a label an allergy parent can't say yes. Wrapped, labelled treats are the kindest thing you can offer.

2. Have a separate "free from" bowl. Keep your allergy-friendly treats apart from everything else so nothing gets mixed up or crumbed on. Bonus points for a little sign so families spot it straight away.

3. Try the teal pumpkin. The Teal Pumpkin idea started in the US and is catching on here: a pumpkin painted teal on your doorstep signals that you've got allergy-friendly options. Pop one outside and watch the relieved faces.

4. Add a non-food option. Glow sticks, stickers, spooky pencils and temporary tattoos go down a storm and suit every child, including those with allergies outside the big 14.

5. Let kids pick, then let parents check. Even with free-from treats, the grown-up should always read the label. Every allergy is different, and the parent knows their child best.

A quick honest note

Our cookies are free from the 14 major allergens, but they're not free from everything. They're made with gluten-free oat flour and coconut sugar, and Honeycomb & Choc and Salted Double Choc also contain coconut oil. If your little one reacts to oats or coconut, or anything else outside the main 14, check the ingredients on the bag first. It's all printed there in plain English.

Stock up for the big night

Our bags come in boxes of 12, so one box covers a dozen trick-or-treaters (or one very committed adult, no judgement). Order this week so they arrive in plenty of time for the 31st.
